Evaluation Criteria for Web-Based Tools


The scoring methodology for Web-based OSINT tools assigns a score of 0-None (or Bad), 0.5-Decent (Needs Improvements) or 1-Great to each criterion below. Click on any top 10 entry to view its detailed score.

  • Number of Search Artifacts, e.g. Email, Username, Phone Number etc.
  • Latest Software Version, i.e. at least one update in the last 6 mo.
  • Transparency in Pricing, i.e. pricing is clearly mentioned on website.
  • GUI - User Interface, i.e. the look and feel of the user interface.
  • Usability, i.e. interface is straightforward to use even for non-techies.
  • Documentation, i.e. how-to, complete documentation or training available.
  • Social Media, i.e. at least one account actively engaging with OSINTers.
  • API, i.e. the company provides an API in addition to web-based search.
  • Free Trial, i.e. free trial is available before given to option to buy.
  • Miscellaneous, e.g. blogs, webinars, conferences, used by law enforcement.

Note! Services that do not provide any type of pricing information (e.g. Request a Demo) are considered enterprise-level and not geared towards the regular OSINTer, and therefore are not included.
